More Solo C3 Strategic Cruisers

This post is a follow-up to my earlier discussion of tactics and a basic Legion fit for tackling C3 Wormhole Anomalies found here: http://splatus.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/solo-c3-strategic-cruisers/ .

Here are some starter Tech2 module-fitted T3 Strategic Cruiser fits for C3 anomalies.  Every Strategic Cruiser in Eve is capable of tackling Class 3 anomalies solo, without a huge amount of expensive bling; it’s often just a question of finding the right fit for you and for your skills.

First up is the Tengu.

The Shield Boost Amplifier is quite a long train; you can replace it with a “Gist C-type Shield Boost Amplifier” with very close to equal effect. A focused Caldari pilot could be in this t2 fit from a fresh new character in less than 120 days without a remap or implants. Note that the Tengu, unlike the Legion, can fit an extra HAM launcher in the highs if you wish to forego the expanded probe launcher and have an alt with one equipped instead. Like the Damage Control, it’s much more about my personal preferences than an explicit requirement, and the Tengu can handily out-DPS most of the other T3s in C3 anomalies due to this option.

To take that same Tengu into C3 data/relic sites, you need to boost the gank and tank quite a bit; I’d invest in faction BCUs, deadspace shield reps, and deadspace shield booster. That’ll get you in the right ballpark; run the numbers in EFT and aim for about 1000DPS of tank for C3 data/relic sites. Deadspace or faction afterburners can also boost your speed quite a bit, as can some implants. Moving faster and doing more damage mean faster site completion times and less risk.

The Proteus is a challenge for solo C3 work. Blasters struggle with range; I’ve been with mates who burn and burn after cruisers and frigates, and if they don’t have webs on them they just can’t get into range effectively. Our corporation recently cooked up this fit as an alternative to the Stratios for C3 work. Though it absolutely looks like it would work fine, we really need a guinea pig to test it out. It should fly like a mini-Dominix: warp in, drop MTU & sentries, orbit the MTU, re-deploy sentries if they get aggro, scoop/loot/salvage & GTFO when done. It’s the only T3 that really looks like it has a shot to out-DPS and out-tank the Tengu when fitted well.

The wild-card slot here is the capacitor booster. You might swap it for an afterburner, cap recharger, web, or target painter, depending on your preferences. Also due to CPU limitations, although this T3 also still comes in under 500M like the others, the Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II’s had to go and be replaced with the almost-equivalent Coreli/Centii/Corpii Adaptive Nano Platings instead. This substitution gives us the CPU needed to make the fit work, yet still remains in line cost-wise with the other T3s mentioned.

Your last question might be, “What about some love for the Loki?” No problem! The tank is slightly thinner than the others, but a substantially faster speed and fairly small sig help a lot.  It flies like the Legion. The small flight of drones helps out with frigates and bashing the battleships.  The Loki — like a blaster Proteus — struggles a bit with range, but not as badly as its Gallente cousin. You’ll end up chasing down a lot of Sleepers that try to burn away in order to reach their optimal range.  I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine how you want to deal with that particular problem.  Swapping to the webbing subsystem seems like a good idea at the time, but every time I try to make that work I end up gimping tank or damage.

Our latest fleet doctrine in Outer Ring Sleeper Collective is based on these kinds of “make sure you can tank the site, and bring what ya got” doctrine. Running C3 sites with a bunch of afterburning, self-tanked ships is fun, fast, and easy. Completion times really don’t compare to our C3 Blitz Fleet doctrine, but that’s OK: these kinds of fits work great from solo up through two or three players, whereas our Blitz Fleets really come into their own at four or more players.

And yes. Despite the objections of some of my corp-mates that it’s our “secret weapon”, I’m going to share a fleet doctrine with you soon that will make you weep for joy at sub-four-minute completion times. Stay tuned!

    • I wouldn’t say that an armor-tanked Loki “does not work”, but swapping to the webbing subsystem ends up creating kind of a cascade of necessary changes that follow logically one after another and require drastic fitting changes to accommodate the change.

      The below is theory-crafted, with no real-world testing, but based on the numbers it *should* work. The basic technique would be similar to that used with a Legion. Keep some transversal while burning at an angle toward the Sleepers, then get into orbit at your optimal around the battleship.

    • Let’s try that again using an actual reply instead of a new top-level comment…

      I suspect you’ve used an Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II instead of the Coreli C-Type Adaptive Nano Plating listed with the fit. I’ve verified in both EFT and Pyfa that it fits fine without implants. The C-Type ANPs are a little expensive (30-45M depending on market fluctuations) but are worth it when you’re spending this much on a cruiser anyway!
